Technology may make short work of long-distance telephone rates
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's deregulation of the telephone industry has opened the door to competition from over 100 international companies. However, this policy has not done much by way of offering the callers cheaper rates. For instance, a call to Hong Kong from the US or vice versa would be cheaper than long-distance calls made within Asia. The policy is apparently a way to fatten the pockets of telephone monopolies within the region. The good news is that the situation is not going to last since technology is making lower long-distance rates an inevitable thing in Asia.

Vast change in the wind for Thailand's energy sector
Article Abstract:
Thailand's energy production capacity needs to increase by 120% to meet the electricity demands of the year 2006. To effectively meet the projected increase in energy demand, the Thai government has allocated $22.8 billion to enhance its energy production capacity between 1997 to 2001. In addition, the government has begun to privatize its electricity generating sector by granting power generation development contracts to private companies. It also plans to diversify Thailand's energy resource base, particularly its natural gas resources.
