Telefonica's local fixed-line unit aims to cut 10,000 more jobs in efficiency bid

Telefonica SA has begun a bid to reduce its domestic fixed line labor force by approximately 10,000 employees by the end of 2000. The unit that will see the downsizing will be Telefonica de Espana SA. The cuts are the most recent in a comprehensive job reduction plan at the unit, which has traditionally been overstaffed. The job cuts are also the first to involve special labor union talks.
