Article Abstract:

Hoogovens is ready to inject its skills and technical experience to modernize its Belgian colleague, Cockerill Sambre. The Dutch iron and steel manufacturing group is willing to co-operate with Cockerill in the the processing, distribution, marketing and sales fields. The group announced that it would not make an offer to take over the Belgian iron and steel company, contrarily to what had been expected. Cockerill has a structural cost problem worth some BFr 1,000 per ton of hot-rolled steel, which will not solved by any alliance with a European colleague, Hoogovens believes.

Alpha Card SCRL, which is to be operational in the second half of 1998, will distribute the American Express cards through the G n rale de Banque's bank network in Belgium. Alpha Card will also propose the card to new clients and clients of other banks than G n rale de Banque. The new entity, based in Brussels with G n rale de Banque's Peter Fimmers as its boss, is a joint venture firm of the Belgian bank and of American Express. G n rale de Banque is the majority shareholder.
