Teutonic grill: a moveable feast
Article Abstract:
West Germans are the leading tourists in the world and are expected to spend over 45 billion deutsche marks (DM) in 1990. An estimated 400,000 foreign jobs are dependent on West German tourism and two million West German jobs are tourism-related. Dresdner Bank estimates that four percent of West German private consumption goes to foreign travel, as compared to the European average of 2.7%. West German's propensity for travel left a DM 29 billion deficit in the country's accounts in the area of tourism, representing a quarter of West German's trade surplus, thus helping to reduce the country's large balance of payments surplus. The favorite locations for foreign travel for West Germans are Italy, Austria, and Spain, which accounted for expenditures of DM 7.3 billion, DM 6.9 billion, and DM 5.6 billion, respectively, in 1988.

The giant aroused
Article Abstract:
The West German electronics manufacturer Siemens, long criticized for the reticence of management, has made significant acquisitions at home and in the US, the UK, and France. Siemens' 360,000 employees manufacture 100,000 electronic and electro-mechanical products and its acquisition of the West German computer manufacturer Nixdorf makes it the largest computer company in Europe after IBM. The company has reached an accord with IBM to develop the next generation of 64-megabit memory chips, which will cost approximately 1 billion deutsche marks in research and development costs. Siemens does not plan diversification outside the electronics industry but will expand its presence internationally, especially in the US and Japanese markets.

Germany: the 1990s are up for grabs
Article Abstract:
West Germany is in the middle of major political changes, many of them brought about because of the influence of the upcoming unified European market. The country's main political party, the Christian Democratic Party, which backs Chancellor Helmut Kohl, has had political setbacks in recent elections. The forecast for the 1990s will depend on the emergence of new politicians from the Green Party or other political relationships.
