The subsector for general purpose detergents dominated the German textile washing products market's detergent's sector, with sales of DM1,735.1 million in 1997 representing a share of 61.1%. The subsector's share declined significantly from 70.7% in 1993 due to increased consumer perception on the application of specialty and color detergents. The growing popularity of color detergents also affected the performance of special purpose detergents, as color detergents are usually priced cheaper than special purpose detergents.

The German market for textile washing products was dominated by the detergents sector, representing a share of 74.4% of value sales in 1997, down from 76.8% in 1993. The detergents sector which realized sales of DM2,840 million in 1997, was affected by the increasing penetration of concentrated products and consumer price sensitivity. Among the sectors that enjoyed slight gains is the sector for fabric softeners, which realized a growth in share by 1.4 percentage points to 12.4% from 1993 to 1997.
