Thai Farmers Bank is hoping to reap gains from offer
Article Abstract:
Thai stock market observers note that the share offering of Thai Farmers Bank is a crucial test of investor confidence in the country's economy. Thai Farmers is one of the more prudent Thai banks, having the foresight to scale down its loan activities prior to the Asian currency crisis as well as the banking crisis. Thai Farmers has marketed a placement for 376 mil new shares, hoping to generate about 40 bil baht ($992 mil) to write off its bad loans. But many stock market analysts are pessimistic about the Thai Farmers share offering, noting the bank's estimated 40% non-performing loans and the slowdown in the Thai property market which will slow the servicing of the loans.

Asian shares risk a squeeze: tighter U.S. interest rates may pinch bourses
Article Abstract:
The dependence of the Asian bourse on the US stock markets is likely to affect investment activities, especially since the US stock market reacted strongly to the decision of the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. Asian stock market observers predict that the stock markets are in for a 10% correction, closely following the corrections in the US stock markets. Hong Kong is expected to follow the reaction of the US stock markets, with its currency pegged to the US dollar.

Markets in region maintain their gains in the new year
Article Abstract:
Asian stock markets continued to rally during the first two weeks of 1999 despite the lack of corporate and debt restructuring that many investors believe to be necessary for growth to prosper in the region. Several investors attribute the rallies in Asia's stock market to excess cash or liquidity. Some contend that the liquidity in Asian markets allows Asian businesses to compensate for their poor earnings and to recover without restructuring.
