McDonald's serves up an image to curry favor with Thai patrons
Article Abstract:
McDonald's seeks to establish a patriotic image for its operations in Thailand by portraying an exporter image for itself in paper placemats that serve as lining for its plastic trays. McDonald's' patriotic-image campaign, which is created by the Leo Burnett advertising agency, has paper placemats saying the line, "Thai products bring millions of baht into Thailand." McDonald's' marketing move is reflective of the consumer-backlash pressure faced by foreign operators who are believed to be contributors to the economic problems of the Asian region.

Thai tobacco talks heat up
Article Abstract:
Thailand Tobacco Monopoly is holding talks with Philip Morris Co and RJ Reynolds Tobacco International Inc of the US, and BAT Industries PLC of the UK, to establish one or more cigarette-manufacturing joint ventures. Upon completion of the proposed joint ventures, international tobacco firms may be able to seize market share by dodging the 60% duty levied on imported cigarettes. The monopoly is keen on offering alternatives to privatization partly because of the dictate of the International Monetary Fund.
