Retail sales of household cleaning agents in the Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg are examined. Sales statistics are provided for the four main categories: dishwashing products, surface formulations and scourers, lavatory cleansers and bleaches, and polishes and waxes. The Benelux market for household cleaning agents is shown to have reached $632 million with growth of 3.3% observed for 1998. Projections indicate that market growth will average 2.1% in constant value terms until 2002. Company profiles of the leading players in the three Benelux markets are provided.

The detergents industries in the countries of Germany, Benelux, Italy, the UK, France, and Spain have all been affected by changing trends, which stress environmental issues in product use. The German, Italian, and British markets are the three largest markets in 1997, with values of $2,245 million, $2,012 million, and $1,873 million, respectively. Procter and Gamble dominates virtually all markets in all countries, with 51.6% share in the UK, a 34.1% share in France, and a 34.0% share in Italy.

Germany's dishwashing market has been dominated by automatic dishwashing products in 1997, with a 63% value share. Dishwashing detergents overall sales in 1997 at DM957 mil, was up 10% from 1993. Market trends for the sector are influenced by consumer preference for environment-friendly products as well as their convenience and effectiveness. Colgate-Palmolive's Palmolive and Henkel's Pril are the two brands dominating the market with value shares of 29% and 28.3%, respectively.
