The Czech Republic: some victories
Article Abstract:
There have been some political obstacles to selling off state-owned operations in the Czech Republic. However, some progress was made towards privatization in the second quarter of 1997. Agreement was reached on a method for selling the government's stake of around 48% in 16 regional gas and energy distributors, and there are plans to issue a tender to sell a one-third stake in aircraft concern Aero Vodochody. Officials are also entering the final stages of the process to find a purchaser for the state's stake in Investicni a Postovni Banka.

Now for some imudugudusisation
Article Abstract:
The Tutsi-led government in Rwanda is implementing a policy of villagization. This involves encouraging people living in the country's north-west province, who are mainly Hutu peasants, to live together at new sites near roads, rather than in small, scattered communities. It is hoped that there will eventually be special villages with shared services and a cooperative farming system. This policy has already been established in other areas of Rwanda, but the north-west has been the focus of fighting between Hutus and Tutsis until recently.

Some Scots say yes
Article Abstract:
England and Scotland were joined together in 1707, and this was opposed by many people in Scotland, though the English parliament paid off the debts of the Scottish nobility. Scotland had suffered crop failures due to climate change, and trade had suffered from war between England and France, as well as from European tariff barriers. Scotland was also hit by spending on a colonial adventure in Central America. Scottish trade and industry benefited from the union, and Scotland played a major role in British emigration to North America.
