The UK oral hygiene market amounted to 651.7 million pounds sterling in 1999, up 19.8% from 1995. Toothpaste accounted for 56.5% of value sales during the period, a rise of 23.8%. Most of the value increase was due to rising demand for whitening and all-in-one toothpastes. The market is led by Colgate-Palmolive and SmithKline Beecham, together having a 43.9% value share in 1999. The oral hygiene market is set to reach 663.2 million pounds sterling in 2000, rising to 717.9 million pounds sterling by 2004.

Second largest sector was toothbrushes with an 18.4% market share worth 79 million pounds sterling, followed by mouthwashes and dental rinses with a 14.4% share worth 62 million pounds sterling. The oral hygiene market is dominated by Colgate-Palmolive. The total market is forecast to be worth 459 million pounds sterling in 1995, rising to 483 million pounds sterling by 1998.

Sales of oral hygiene products in the German retail market are examined. Sales statistics for the 1994-1998 period are provided for four sectors: toothpaste, toothbrushes, denture care, and extra care. One significant finding was that the German market was characterized by intensive price wars during this period. The market, estimated at around 2.04 billion deutsche marks, is forecast to grow by 7.2% in the 1998-2003 period. Company profiles of the key players in the German market are provided.
