Fabric softeners accounted for 30.1% of value sales in the German market for textile washing products in 1997, at DM473.4 million, up 5.6% from 1993. Of this amount, concentrated fabric softener products accounted for 99%, with value sales of DM468.7 million, while standard variants only registered DM4.7 million in value sales. Apart from gaining from an improvement in publicity and image, the entire fabric softener sector is less affected by consumers' sensitivity to prices, allowing manufacturers to conform prices in connection with increasing expenses for raw materials.

Fabric softeners packaged in refill pouches accounted for 51% in value sales in the entire fabric softeners market in Germany, at DM241.4 million, down from DM260.1 million, or 58% in 1993. This downturn is attributed primarily to the introduction of the Okoleichtflasche, or eco light bottle, packaging in 1996, which gained acceptance due to the reduced chance of spillage when filling the bottle. Thus, all other fabric softener variants, including those packaged in eco light bottles, registered DM232 million in value sales in 1997, from only DM188.4 million in 1993.
