The Indian ideal: the end of the 'Third Way'
Article Abstract:
India's failures since achieving independence in 1947 are often attributed to corruption, flawed implementation and bad management. However its problems are due to the way its closed economy links business so closely to government, leading to collusion rather than cooperation. More than half of its children suffer from malnutrition and half its adult population is illiterate, despite the country having a number of world class universities. India needs to follow a similar Asian model as found in the tiger nations of Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.

Land of opportunity
Article Abstract:
India will see GDP growth of 5.9% in the year to Mar 31, 1997, according to forecasts from the National Council for Applied Economic Research. Agricultural output will rise by 4.1%, with industrial production up by 9.3%. India is attracting large amounts of foreign investment, with foreign direct investments in the first half of the 1996-1997 financial year being almost 30% higher than in the year-earlier period. There remains some political uncertainty, but this does not seem to be deterring foreign investors.

The real bosses of India
Article Abstract:
India's 2.2 million rural shopkeepers exert tremendous influence on the buying decisions of the country's 439 million villagers who are not exposed to advertisements and other media. The power of these shopkeepers will increase as the market for consumer products in rural areas continues to grow. Successful packaged goods manufacturers must be involved in all aspects of retailing in small shops and are best equipped with their own distributors and staff.
