Article Abstract:
Real value sales of tobacco products are predicted to grow by 11.7% to L22,255 billion between 1997 and 2002, but volume sales will continue its downtrend to drop by 5.3% to 85,392 tonnes over the same period. Volume sales will continue to come under pressure because of increasing health concerns and stricter enforment of restrictions on public smoking. The public's growing health awareness will shift demand away from high-tar tobacco products towards low-tar alternatives. Foreign brands are expected to continue to penetrate the market at the expense of domestic brands.
