The National Minimum Wage and its effect on business
Article Abstract:
The National Minimum Wage (NMW) introduced by the UK government in Apr 1999 could affect between 1.9 million and 2.4 million workers aged over 18, accounting for between 8.4% and 10.4% of the total workforce. The NMW will probably affect certain occupations and industries more than others. Its impact will be greater on part-time employees than on full-time employees, and it will particularly affect hotels and restaurants, which have the highest proportion of low-paid employees of any industrial sector. The introduction of the NMW will probably increase wage costs by around 0.6% overall.

Diversification of income generation within the football industry
Article Abstract:
British soccer clubs have traditionally made most of their revenue from ticket sales for matches, but this has changed as new sources of income have become increasingly important. These new sources include corporate sponsorship, TV deals, and merchandising. Manchester United's merchandising revenue accounted for nearly as much as ticket receipts, at 33% and 34% respectively in 1997. Some soccer clubs could become major brands, but this is less true of clubs outside the British Premier League, many of which are struggling financially.

British Rail privatisation
Article Abstract:
The UK government wishes to sell off British Rail in line with its policy of privatising what were previously state-owned monopolies. Even the busiest sections of the rail network are losing money. There are arguments both for and against privatisation. British Rail will probably be sold in parts to operators such as the British Airports Authority, Sainsbury's and Virgin.
