The Next phenomenon
Article Abstract:
Next is a Hong Kong weekly which was founded by Jimmy Lai, a businessman, in 1989 to propagate the ideology of democracy and individualism. This magazine is based on American and European models, is written in simple Cantonese, and carries articles on politics, business, celebrities, news and cookery. It has become so popular that it is now divided into three parts. The magazine's publishers pay their journalists well and allow professional auditing of their circulation figures, a practice that makes them popular with media directors in Hong Kong.

Model student
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's Fang Brothers Manufacturing has been successfully operating its fashion retail business under the brand name Toppy. The company is one of Hong Kong's top apparel makers, a distinction that is important considering that the colony is regarded as the international leader in the production and sourcing of textiles but not in design and marketing. The company has started deviating from the overfashionable designs of many of its local competitors in an attempt to break into the international market.

Art in the time of doi moi
Article Abstract:
Artists experience freedom in Vietnam because of doi moi, or renovation. Once controlled and repressed, the arts in Vietnam are flourishing, signaled by the opening of art galleries and the publication of avant-garde magazines. While enjoying this new-found liberty, artists are still wary of government official who oppose any work critical of socialism. With the signing of a peace pact with Cambodia, however, artists hope that their crafts would continue to flourish.
