The Philippine disease
Article Abstract:
The Philippines made considerable efforts in 1996 to promote itself as the newest tiger economy in Asia. However, this image has been damaged recently by a number of high-profile cases, including the ruling by the Supreme Court in favour of Emilio Yap of the Manila Prince Hotel, who was the losing bidder against Renong Berhad, in conjunction with ITT Sheraton, for a 51% stake in state-owned Manila Hotel. Some observers feel that this decision could have a very negative impact on foreign investment in the Philippines, which is still greatly in need of assistance from abroad.

Ramos's toughest month: golf with Goh Chok Tong might help
Article Abstract:
Philippine President Fidel Ramos effectiveness in managing his three simultaneous crises will say much about the strength of democracy in his nation. Even as he tried to interest foreign investors in his country, Chinese expansionism showed up nearby in the Spratly Islands, the Abu Sattaf group of Muslim terrorists struck boldly, and a very public outcry erupted over Singapore's execution of Filipino maid Flor Contemplacion. The last has proven the hardest to handle, but the Philippines must show the maturity to do so peacefully.

On top of old smoky
Article Abstract:
The Smoky Mountain city dump in Manila reveals the Philippine economy's closed nature, which deprives its citizens of the opportunity they need to reach their full potential. President Fidel Ramos's failed attempt to close the dump by decree shows his misunderstanding of economic problems, further revealed by his overregulation of business and the Filipino First laws that block needed investment from overseas. If he would concentrate on those problems people living in the dump would have better alternatives.
