Article Abstract:
Bank of Scotland has made a hostile bid for National Westminster Bank, which had itself bid for Legal and General. NatWest had offered too much for Legal and General, and its stock price fell. Barclays, which ranks third in the British banking industry, could also be vulnerable to a bid. NatWest has performed poorly in terms of cost control and acquisitions and has not been successful in its attempt to enter investment banking. Bank of Scotland has been more focused and more successful in controlling costs.
