A General Model for the Behaviour of Infinite Buffers with Periodic Service Opportunities
Article Abstract:
A discrete buffered system having infinite buffer size is analyzed for situations where output channels are only available on occasion. Analysis is directed toward a general arrival process, which might be Poisson or not, or bulk or single in nature. A general probability function for the amount of output channel is given. A stochastic level of output channels is used periodically to model blocking, if any exists. Different points of buffer occupancy are computed. Particular distributions are explained for random variables. Several graphs of buffer occupancy links to arrival periods are highlighted. Findings indicate that a bulk arrival process usually results in higher mean buffer occupancy levels.

Choice of the best time scale for preventive maintenance in heterogeneous environments
Article Abstract:
The formal aspects of determining the optimal time scale for preventive maintenance is investigated. Two principal time scales are considered, namely, operation time and total number of shocks. The optimal linear combination of the two scales are numerically shown to have the minimal coefficient of variation of system lifetime. A general theory is developed to link optimality.
