Article Abstract:
The retail market for meat and poultry in five European countries was examined. The countries are France, Germany, Italy, Spain and UK. The data used for the study covered the years 1995-1998 for current data and the years 1998-2001 for future prospects of the market. The findings showed that the link between Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and eating of infected beef adversely affected demand for beef which increased sales of pork and poultry. Other important trends were the growth of one-stop grocery outlets, the development of convenience products and increased demand for poultry.
