The Wal-Mart decade

Wal-Mart Canada Inc has been named as the Marketer of the Decade by the Marketing magazine of Canada. The Bentonville, AR-based retailer has been cited for raising customers' expectations of value, selection and customer service. Wal-Mart Canada, which operates 166 stores with some 40,000 employees, has doubled its share of the Canadian department store market from 15.4% in 1994 to 30.1% in 1999. The company posts higher return on assets than those of its competitors because it spends under 0.5% of its sales on advertising, has lower distribution costs and lower supply costs.

Make-up Art Cosmetics (MAC) has successfully penetrated the consumer market after initially starting as supplier to professional make-up artists. The company attributed the success of its affordable, matte- finish line to accessibility factor in which consumers of all ethnicities feel comfortable in using its products because it is not using a supermodel to carry its brand. MAC is also an active supporter in funding AIDS-related research.
