The 'Working Man's Savoy' lives again: Bruce House, a run-down Arts and Crafts hostel in London, has been resurrected by Levitt Bernstein for the Peabody Trust
Article Abstract:
Levitt Bernstein Associates, architects, renovated Bruce House, a Grade II listed building in Covent Garden, for the Peabody Trust to provide permanent homes for those with a history of street homelesnes. The building also houses Centrepoint accommodation for young homeless people, Look Ahead Housing Association bedsits, a skills development centre and restaurant space. The projecting rear wing was removed and a new built layer was wrapped around the inner rear elevations featuring glass block screens and red brickwork to match original elevations. Internally timber shelves, seats and settles have been retained.

A helping hand from healing arts
Article Abstract:
There are indications of a more innovative approach being taken to the use of art in hospitals in the UK. Architectural firm Lewis & Hickey DJP was able to involve public-art consultant PACE from the beginning of its work on the new Edinburgh Dental Institute. Here, art works include a pinball machine with dentures and toothbrushes as the players by Anita Wohlen and fibre-optic constellations in the ceiling by Jane Fawns Watt. At the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridport, Wales, Canadian artist David Pearl was involved at an early stage. Here, art has been used to clarify circulation.

Estate Action injects new life into medium-rise blocks
Article Abstract:
The Priory Court Estate in the London Borough of Waltham Forest is being transformed thanks to a refurbishment programme being implemented with the help of Circle 33 housing association and finance from the UK Dept of the Environment's Estate Action Funding programme. The estate was a showcase estate in the 1950s, but had become increasingly run-down. The refurbishment programme, now in its third year, has focused on informing and involving tenants at every stage. The housing blocks have had new cladding, new roofs, improved lift lobbies and car parking, and central heating installed.
