The afforestation problem: a heuristic method based on simulated annealing
Article Abstract:
A heuristic approach is used to present optimization problems regarding afforestation and to describe the Decision Support System (DSS) which assisted in the solution of these problems. A two-step heuristic method, based on simulated annealing, determined the location and design of new forest compartments planted in a specific place. The combination of geographic data and mathematical programming techniques in the DSS proved to be simple, easily implemented and versatile in its applications.

Solving the failure-to-fit problem for plant layout: by changing department shapes and sizes
Article Abstract:
A new process for solving the problem of assigning positions to unequal fixed size and shape departments within a given plant area is presented. This method combines the existing layout strategies with heuristic search processes to develop a solution to the failure-to-fit problem by altering the size and/or shape of the departments systematically without human intervention. Empirical findings indicate that the new method can provide high quality and practical solutions.
