The boomers' queasy future
Article Abstract:
The US has achieved a federal budget surplus, while the social security system faces financial strains and possible bankruptcy in 2032. There are no easy solutions to the problem of funding Medicare and Social Security. Medicare costs are rising as people live longer and technology advances. Demographic factors will put pressure on Social Security, and the cushion that Trust Funds provide will not last indefinitely. A move from pay-as-you-go will mean that workers will have to pay for the retired and for their own retirement, while privatization means higher administrative costs.

A tale of two lobbies: why do two similar countries disagree so profoundly about guns?
Article Abstract:
The UK and the US have many similarities, but they seem worlds apart on the question of gun control. A massacre of school children in Scotland is leading to even stricter control in the UK, but little control legislation has been able to pass in the US, primarily because of the gun lobby.
