The cashmere crash
Article Abstract:
The cashmere industry in Mongolia is in crisis despite a rise in demand for the product in some countries. There are large stocks of cashmere and the quality is declining. Raw cashmere prices have dropped due to an increase in supply and a drop in demand from Japan. Herders have interbred cashmere goats with angora goats to boost supply, and this has both increased total supply and hit quality. China has purchased cashmere from Mongolia, and accounts for up to 80% of Mongolia's crop. Small herdsmen could set up co-ops to give themselves more weight in the market.
