The church at bay
Article Abstract:
The church has played a major role in politics in the Philippines, and helped to draft the 1987 constitution. The influence of the church has started to decline, and this is evident in disputes over Stanley Ho's plans for new casinos, and on issues such as contraception and the death penalty, which has been brought back, despite church opposition. The government aims to change the constitution, and the church opposes change, fearing that it could permit a new dictator to emerge.
