The darkest corner of Africa
Article Abstract:
Sierra Leone has been affected by war since 1991, and rebels have entered Freetown, the capital of the country, in Jan 1999. The war reflects divisions between urban and rural areas, coastal and interior locations, and older and younger people. The Nigerian army restored the elected government in Feb 1998, but elections involved under a quarter of the electorate, and the government did not have control of Sierra Leone's diamond fields. Children are involved in the armies of both sides. A rebel government would not be recognised internationally, and nor would it be removed if an intervention force is not successful.

Legacy of genocide
Article Abstract:
A fragile peace now reigns in Congo and other parts of Africa that were affected by civil war but Rwanda, Burundi and some parts of Eastern Congo remain in conflict. The Great Lakes region is seeing an upward trend in killings as Hutu-Tutsi conflict intensifies. The Hutu-dominated governments of both countries remain under threat of attack from Tutsi militia with Uganda's northern border also seeing a resurgence of fighting.

Darkest Africa
Article Abstract:
Unnatural borders left by colonial masters are partly the cause of Africa's troubles. In many cases some of the disputes causing civil war could be solved by allowing autonomous groups in countries to form their own nations.
