Heavy rains caused rivers in France, Belgium, Germany and Holland to overflow their banks, killing 40 people, deluging cities and prompting mass evacuations. Global warming and projects that reduced the floodplain are possible causes. Government flood control projects are one solution.

There is increasing evidence that cytomegalovirus, once considered relatively benign, could actually be promoting heart disease. The virus, a member of the herpes family, may advance atherosclerosis by causing lesions in the arteries. Research is discussed.
