The export question weighs heavily on local economy
Article Abstract:
The South Korean economy is struggling due to a fall in exports, especially to the United States where there was a 10% drop in South Korean imports during the first quarter of 2001. Slower export demand has negatively affected the paper, semiconductor, computer, textiles, steel, and chemicals markets, while cars and ships continue to sell well. Analysts fear that stock market losses will severely drag the economy down during the last half of 2001 unless the government steps in with a limit on excessive equity investment.
