The fatal shore
Article Abstract:
It is feared that the survival of leatherback turtles could be under threat because of the numerous hazards associated with their nesting sites. The turtles nest in five sites around the world, including Rantau Abang in Malaysia. Conservationists in the region have noted a sharp drop in nesting numbers over recent years, blamed on man-made and natural perils, including predation, driftnet fishing, sea pollution and too many tourists at once-remote nesting sites. It is feared that, if the decline continues, the giant leatherback could be extinct by 2003.

Underclass blues: Indian minority fails to benefit from economic boom
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's Indian minority remains largely mired in poverty and both contributes to and suffers from social ills disproportionally. Experts say the chief cause is India's caste system, which is entrenched among Indian-Malays, most of whom are descended from low-caste laborers. While Indians are only 8% of the population, they committed a third of the 377 murders in 1994 and suffer from alcoholism and other problems at high rates. Malaysian-Indians say the Malaysian-Indian Congress does little to help.
