Unease in utopia
Article Abstract:
Sweden is one of the most tolerant societies in the world, yet there has been recent tension in the country over the acceptance of political refugees and other immigrants. In 1989, a high number of immigrants and political refugees entered Sweden, forcing the authorities to house many in rural areas where the sight of foreigners is uncommon. Some of the rural Swedes demonstrated intolerance for the new arrivals, including insults and violent acts. Swedish society as a whole recognizes the contributions immigrants have made to Sweden and there has been a debate on how to improve the integration of immigrants into Swedish society.

Don't speak French in Flanders
Article Abstract:
Belgium has always had to confront confusion over language and culture because Belgian inhabitants typically speak either Flemish or French, but as of January 1, 1989, Belgium was divided into a tripartite federation of Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels because of renewed unrest over language conflicts. The country now has three systems of regional and communal legislation and administration, which will hopefully alleviate some of the strife over the battle between language, culture and identity.
