The global sweatshop
Article Abstract:
Companies' use of sweatshop labor in the Third World has attracted publicity in the US, and Bill Clinton has suggested a No Sweat label to combat the problem. However, a label stating that child labor has not been used may exacerbate the problem. Such labels would increase the burden of codes and legislation, encouraging usage of middlemen who cannot easily be controlled. Health and environmental standards may be ignored in some countries and the alternative for many children working in factories may be prostitution or collecting garbage. Companies should be encouraged to stay and work out problems instead of simply doing business elsewhere.

Global tastes, local trimmings
Article Abstract:
Multinational companies often favour a global branding approach, using a single brand name and package design for all countries in which their product is sold, targeting the same group of consumers in each country and running a single advertising campaign. This approach tends to be opposed by employees in local offices. In Asia, where markets are becoming increasingly competitive, conflict of this kind can have a very negative impact on a company's market share. In general, the best approach is to adapt branding for local markets.
