The gloves are off: Sukarno's daughter fights for political survival
Article Abstract:
Megawati Sukarnoputri and her Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) harshly attacked military and government leaders in June 1996 for endorsing a splinter group's national congress. Claiming her opponents are trying to get her removed from party leadership, she hinted at the possibility of street demonstrations with millions or people supporting democratic principles. Megawati, who could be a credible challenger to President Suharto's decades-long government, also wants a more independent position for the PDI.
