The last bastion
Article Abstract:
Most countries in Southeast Asia have seen the military dwindle in power as economic ascendance waxes, but Thailand, Indonesia, and Burma stand in contrast. The military in all three has a tradition, throughout the 20th Century, of dominating or powerfully shaping domestic politics and relations with other countries. In Thailand the military's grasp was weakened by middle-class rebellion in 1992, but in Indonesia and Burma, where colonial struggles live in memory, the army will likely remain a powerful force.

What currency crisis?
Article Abstract:
The currency crises in Southeast Asia have not cooled sales of designer clothing, Swiss watches and other luxury items. Tourists from Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong are seeking bargains in Bangkok, Jakarta and Singapore where prices have not risen as much as currencies have gone down. Also wealthy locals have not been as badly affected by the crises because of diversified investments.
