The lucky country
Article Abstract:
Australia has a bright future in Asia if it can transform its own economy into a more competitive form and become a compelling supplier of Asia's needs. In 1995 it sent two-thirds of its exports to Asia, up from a fifth in 1957, and its universities draw thousands of Asian students, but its wealth of natural resources has not translated into growing human wealth. Asians living in Australia point to high taxes and a form of egalitarianism that looks down on entrepreneurs, as well as restrictive laws. That group may yet help Australia make the transition to serious competitiveness, though.

The hotel to which MacArthur returned
Article Abstract:
The Manila Hotel in the Philippines is not only the country's best hotel, and one of the best in Asia, but is also of great historical interest as a favorite abode of General Douglas MacArthur. Indeed, MacArthur may have had this hotel in mind in 1941 when he uttered his legendary 'I shall return' pledge to lead the recapture of the Philippines from the Japanese, which he did in 1945. The Manila's many attractions include its beautiful lobby, status as a national landmark and reasonable rates.

The white man's burden
Article Abstract:
Australians have passionately abandoned their White Australia principle, adopting the region's and perhaps the world's most liberal immigration policy. In 1996, 23 years after White Autralia formally expired, the country has three times the percentage of immigrants that the US has, and 40% of the 1995 immigrants were Asian. Now the differences of new peoples are officially embraced, an addition to Australia's social and economic mix rather than a dilution of its political stability.
