The 'masochist' who hosted a Melbourne hotel gala
Article Abstract:
Hotelier Christian Le Prince orchestrated the Nov 1986 opening celebration for the Hyatt on Collins, a 560-room Melbourne, Australia hotel. 700 guests attended. Hyatt International pres Bernd Chorengel and real estate developer Max Moar helped host the event, which capped three years of construction. The $800 million project is owned equally by Moar, Grollo Group, and Australian Industry Development Corp. Privately owned Hyatt International manages the new hotel, a 33-story, crescent-shaped building with 12 kilograms of gold leaf on its exterior. Inside, the hotel offers Verona marble staircases and special architectural features such as concealed tea-coffee makers in guest rooms. Chorengel says that, like all Hyatt International hotels, Hyatt on Collins will reflect local culture and cuisine. The executives who built the new hotel, Moar, Chorengel, and Le Prince, are profiled.

Countering the hijack menace
Article Abstract:
Hijackers are usually either political defectors, criminal fugitives, a criminal gang seeking monetary extortion, a terrorist group seeking publicity or religious fanatics seeking publicity, or some combination thereof. Approximately 40 percent of hijackers have been women and most are university graduates. The hijacker's profile is detailed, and methods for avoiding hijacks and for coping if hijacked are discussed. Travelers are advised to dress casually, keep their travel itineraries confidential, sit next to a window near the back of the plane, minimize conversations with strangers, and keep their passports out of sight. If hijacked, the traveler should remain calm, avoid eye contact with the hijacker, appear willing to cooperate, and avoid conversing on political subjects.

Fending for yourself in a hotel fire: preventive action
Article Abstract:
The principle rule in surviving a hotel fire is not to jump from higher than three floors up. While the threat of hotel fires is always present for travelers, little work has been done on educating them on hotel fire safety. Tips are provided for travelers on how to avoid disaster in the event of a hotel fire. These include: choosing a room near the ground and close to an exit; investigating the area to find fire exits and doorways; scouting as many optional escape routes as possible; quick location of the room key; how to hole up in the room if the fire is too close to leave; examining windows as exits; knowing the fire emergency number and how to inform the proper officials; how to make a mask; and avoiding elevators.
