Chmn Livio DeSimone of Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing took over leadership of the company in 1991, and by 1994 profits had increased by 5%. The company has tougher financial goals and has become leaner, but it still filed for 543 patents in 1994, a 40% increase over 1991.

OCA Applied Optics will market the first optical correlator, a light-based processor. Correlators convert images into Fourier transforms. OCA's innovative correlator costs about $10,000 and is compact. The technology is described.
