Article Abstract:
Hindustan Lever, the largest producer of personal products and detergents in India, saw strong growth in 1996, a year in which it made preparations for facing up to the challenges of the new corporate environment emerging in India. It expanded through a merger with corporate sister operation Brooke Bond Lipton India, and also benefited from the ending of a marketing and manufacturing joint venture between Procter and Gamble and Godrej Soaps, its main competitor. Other leading Indian corporations are discussed.

Doordarshan delivers: India's state broadcaster loosens up, at last
Article Abstract:
The Indian state television broadcaster Doordarshan has begun responding to market pressures and public demands with revised programming and greater openness. It now carries MTV's music videos and other popular programming, but censors the privately produced shows. In Oct 1994 Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao cancelled plans to roll out a new channel, one of a series of blows. The network has tentative plans to privatize eventually, but its bloated bureaucracy may fight that change.

Passing the muck
Article Abstract:
The outbreak of huge ambitious infrastructure projects in Hong Kong strain government funds to solve environmental problems contributed to by fast development and insufficient infrastructure investment in past years. In response, Governor Christopher Patten said the government would spend HK$7.3 billion to redirect refuse dumped by defective sewage. His plans include the building of a new sewer network and the implementation of levies on households and industry.
