Pharmaceutical companies are not likely to engage in much future research and development of contraceptive drugs because the current drugs available are fairly reliable. Radical research ideas would make contraceptives easier to take and produce fewer side effects, but they may not be enacted.

The launch of a chemical contraceptive for men is moving closer to reality, 50 years after the invention of the Pill. Organon is carrying out clinical trials of a system which combines a daily pill with three-monthly injections of male hormones, while Schering is testing injectable hormones.
