Philippine Pres Fidel V. Ramos has risen to the defense of the country's banking and real estate industries which are predicted to follow the example of Thailand's ailing companies. Ramos assured the worried investors of the soundness of the Philippine economy. Goldman Sachs L.L.C. bank analyst Roy Ramos compares Thailand's crisis to the alarming high lending rates of banks to the real estate community in three countries, namely: the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

A report by Salomon Smith Barney states that consumer finance in Asia is an underpenetrated market and that rapid growth in the years ahead should be expected. Credit cards and personal loans are still relatively rare in Asia compared to the U.S., with credit card debt as low as 3% to 5% of household liabilities in Asia compared to around 9% in the U.S.
