The next frontier for project finance
Article Abstract:
A shift is taking place away from financing agreements for independent power projects (IPPs) which involve long-term power price commitments, in the form of contracts for differences or power purchase agreements. There is now more emphasis on merchant generation IPPs, especially as the further deregulation of the UK electricity market is making regional electricity companies and IPP developers cautious about entering into long-term contracts for differences. The success of merchant generation will depend on being able to forecast electricity prices accurately.

Financing projects through bond markets
Article Abstract:
The use of bond finance to fund project debts is under-utilized because of the inflexibility of the traditional bond structure. Few project financiers have approached the bond market, which accounted for just 730 million pounds sterling of the huge project sector market in 1996. The appointment of a Project Agent, such as a division of a bank, would allow the borrower access to a single entity with a wide range of skills and experience and which would have comprehensive discretionary powers.
