The painful privatisation of South Africa
Article Abstract:
Jeff Radebe has been given the responsibility for privatizations in South Africa, and he faces a difficult taks. The program includes the sale of a 20% stake in South African Airways to Swissair. There are a large number of public sector enterprises which accumulated during the previous regime. Many public companies have financial problems and too many employees. The government aims to raise funds from privatizations, but it also aims to help poorer people, and these different aims make the process more difficult.

South Africa goes for growth
Article Abstract:
South Africa's president, Thabo Mbkei, has to tackle the problem of poverty and the economy has tobe liberalized. Some changes have been made, with privatizations, reductions in the public sector work force, and control of labor union power. There have been calls for caution due to the political consequences of moving too rapidly. These calls are mistaken, and South Africa has to carry out radical reforms, such as reducing the hold of state monopolies, more rapidly in order to tackle the problem of poverty.
