Major is under fire from with his Tory ranks, from the new centrist-sounding Labour Party, and from Ulster Unionists. Many of the nine Tory members who refused to back him in the Nov '95 confidence vote are from marginal election districts, or maybe challenged by other Tories.

The levitating Lib Dems

The Liberal Democrats have become large and powerful enough to possibly take the place of the Tories as the United Kingdom's second party. They are too big to simply protest; they must define what they stand for and what distinguishes them from Labor and the Tories.
