The real leap forward
Article Abstract:
China is seeking to join the World Trade Organization (WTO), and an agreement with the US makes this goal more achievable. China could achieve WTO membership in 2000, and take part in talks on world trade. China has carried out some reforms which have helped increased trade, though China only accounted for 2.3% of world trade in 1993, a level it had previously reached in 1928. China faces non-tariff barriers in Europe and the US, and WTO membership should help to improve the trade potential of China.
