The right and its wrongs: fringe rightist groups crave attention
Article Abstract:
Extremists in Japan run the gambit from family-value patriots like Toyohisa Eto, leader of the Japan Youth Federation, to those who use political organization to cover for illegal business activities, and most are ignored by all but the tourists. Police, now enforcing tougher laws aimed at curbing right-wing intimidation tactics, estimate there are about 16,000 active members in about 1,000 organizations, about 1/3 having links to gangs. Eto and the Federation gained international attention after building a lighthouse on the Senkaku islands, territory disputed by Japan and China.
