The road ahead
Article Abstract:
The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) aims to assess ageing in the US, where an estimated 23% of the population will be over 65-years-old by 2040, with those over 85-year-old comprising the fastest growing age group. The National Institute on Ageing awarded Michigan university's Survey Research Center a contract in 1990 to collect data on those born from 1931 to 1941, later extended to cover those over 50-years-old. Over 300 academic papers have been published. Older people with cars have better social networks. There are wide variations in amounts saved by people with similar incomes, and serious illness can significantly reduce net worth due to lost earnings.
