The rugby business
Article Abstract:
The sport of rugby has undergone dramatic change in the last few years, led by the move away from amateurism towards professionalism and the influx of large amounts of television funding. It is estimated that spectators spent 49 million pounds sterling in 1995/96 attending rugby matches. Admissions during the period have been largely static, with value being gained by increased ticket charges. It is expected that rugby union and rugby league will begin to converge in a similar way to the soccer industry. Total rugby receipts are set to rise by 50% by 2001.
