Breaking down the barriers
Article Abstract:
Banks have tended toward a new approach with regard to their European merger and acquisition activities, focusing less on countries and more on activities and sectors. This development reflects the globalization of the economy and the decreasing importance of national borders. Sectors which were important in Europe in 1994 include sugar and by-products of sugar. Deals include the acquisition of Bouquet D'Or by Cadbury Schweppes for 18 million pounds sterling.

Investors undeterred by the political climate
Article Abstract:
The unsettled political scene in Italy has in the past tended to deter companies looking to establish a presence in continental Europe from using this country as a springboard. However, it is worth looking closer at Italy, as it actually offers considerable benefits to acquirors. Italian companies are currently performing relatively well, and in 1994 there were 141 acquisitions worth 4.6 billion pounds sterling.
