The tyranny of terminology
Article Abstract:
The complexities of international business today have rendered current political and economic concepts outmoded. Countries and companies used to be limited by internal factors such as labor and capital and international trade was based on shipping raw materials from one place for manufacture or assembly in another. However, today's multinational businesses transport ever more complex assemblies of parts and freely shift design, production, management, and distribution from place to place. Apec leaders attending a meeting on trade in late 1996 would do well to consider that.

Culture shock: Korean employers irk Vietnamese workers
Article Abstract:
An incident at a South Korean-owned plant in Vietnam manufacturing shoes for Nike Inc. highlights the tensions that can result from cultural differences between management and workers. A Korean forewoman struck Vietnamese women assembly workers in the face. She was subsequently fired and convicted of humiliating workers. Nike, already reeling from charges of unsatisfactory labor conditions at its overseas assembly sites, provided reassurances that its subcontractors in Asia are held to certain standards of conduct.

The post-national economy
Article Abstract:
The making of Nike shoes illustrates the increasing complexities of manufacture in a global market. Although a factory in China produces the shoes, one style has 52 components manufactured in five different countries. Coordinating manufacturing even for a shoe is a logistic nightmare, and complexity increases along with complexity of the manufactured object. This means that companies must think globally rather than locally, and Asia's ability to stay competitive will depend on factors other than low wages.
