The wonderful world of creative problem-solving
Article Abstract:
Innovative problem-solving methods must be carefully tested by organizations, and managers should expect to incorporate aspects of several different methods in finding the solution for a single problem. Among the various methods of problem solving available are brainstorming, which tries to collect as many ideas as possible before a judgment is made; synectics, which attempts to make the strange familiar and the familiar strange; fundamental design, which looks at problems from different levels; hypothetical situations, which develops products for imaginary environments; and forced relationships; which connects elements that are naturally unconnected. Also described are the K.J. method (Kawakita Jiro) and the equivalent transformation method, both of which are popular in Japan.

Cautionary notes on prescriptions for success
Article Abstract:
Despite the efforts of many people to analyze what characteristics in corporate management lead to excellence (so as to share the keys to success with managers in other organizations), what works for one firm may not work for another. The companies found on the 'best-managed' lists usually share some characteristics, including the resistance to counting on those things that brought success in the past. Three areas have been identified as aspects of management required for long-term success: the effective processing of materials, people, money, energy and information; the objectives and strategies being pursued by the organization; and the interaction of the organization with its external environment.

Linking good minds together can spur ideas and bring results
Article Abstract:
Innovations in telecommunications and computer technologies require that businesses look for ways to realize the full potential of the information systems available, which in turn requires creativity. Computers, and particularly personal computers, allow managers to have ready access in milliseconds to volumes of valuable information, but many managers claim they do not have time to learn how to use the systems. The combination of advanced computer and communications technologies and the vast pools of information available require managers to learn to access this information.
