Theme park owner in Bali is thrown for a loop by Indonesia's wild ride
Article Abstract:
Taman Festival Bali in Indonesia, a proposed $100 million theme park in Bali, is now nearly empty despite being a hit during its Oct. 1997 opening. The tourists are not coming in as expected because of fears of forest-fire haze and political disturbance. The few guests do not yet pay the $27 ticket price for admission and rides and the average take per person is about 20,000 rupiah, or $1.36 at the current exchange rates. Owner Bambang Pangetsu said the park is lucky if it draws in 200 people on weekends, much less than the projected 1,200-daily minimum guests. Many of the park's attractions are inoperative or remain to be uninstalled. The park's $5 million laser equipment is awaiting insurance to cover the $150,000 cost needed to repair the damage after it was struck by lightning.
